Hello,

I recently purchased an HP Pavilion ze5517ea Notebook that I'd like to
use to dual-boot between XP Pro and Slackware 9.1.

I've attempted a couple of installations already and have had all go
well up until the reboot. The system hangs on every reboot at 2
particular places: the first being ehci_*** (I believe has something
to do with USB) and the second having to do with DHCP addressing.

At first I had a problem with LILO loading at all, but resolved that
by increasing the size of the root directory...as Slack informed me
that it couldn't write the information due to insufficient disk size.
After that, all went well after which I rebooted only to be presented
with my current situation.

For the record, I have some general experience with installing Linux
(read...RedHat, SuSE...), FreeBSD and OpenBSD, so the process is not
that unfamiliar, I'm just not knowledgeable enough to conclude where
my next step is outside of Googling and now this newsgroup.

I read in a non-Slackware related newsgroup that one should check to
see if Legacy USB support is enabled in the BIOS, so I'll take a look
at that although I understand that it might not be applicable. I've
read at Linux-on-Laptops that this series (ze5500) of laptops has been
shown to run Mandrake 9.2 and Debian, but I sort of subscribe to the
idea that distribution installation is second to kernel support, so
I'm ASS-uming that if it's supported in a particular kernel, then the
distribution is not really that important...except for a tweak here or
there. If I'm mistaken, please help me out of my illusion.

Lastly, let me say that the router I use to handle DHCP addressing has
been pretty straight-forward in regards to all other installations
I've performed, so I can't imagine that has anything to do with
anything...but I could be wrong.

Probably not related but it's worth a shot... I got Slack
9.1 running on my ze5375us, whih has similar specs to yours.
I noticed that I could power on and boot without a problem,
but I could not REboot. If I powered off and on, everything
was fine again. Looks like reboot is not doing a full
power-on reset.

Finally gave up (temporarily) on turning this beast into a
linux box. I tried a 2.6.0 kernal, but still could not get
ACPI suspend, or even DPMS screen blanking to go. I'll try
again in awhile, after 2.6 nd ACPI have been aound a bit
longer.

Thanks for the reply. You know, I understood beforehand that Slack was
not for newbies, but that won't stop me from trying. :^) In any event,
I got it installed on my desktop without incident. I'm now in the
process of configuring X as I have two video cards and would like to
make use of both monitors as I do with XP. It's been doing a little
hoping around, but I attest that more to my limited knowledge.

I have to add, that I love the installation procedure and process in
Slack. No bullshit ads or other nonsense that you really don't need to
know or care about. Just install and go. The only thing I'd change (if
I could and knew how) would be to add some sort of package
identification while selecting your configuration. It seems that you
only get to see what each package is while it's being installed. I
think it would help it I knew what I was installing or selecting while
I was choosing. All in all, the installation was sweet and to the
point. Ala BSD. Bravo Slack!!!

Hello Again,

I thought I should say that I finally have Slackware 9.1 running on my
HP Notebook. It took some looking around, but I finally found a push
in the right direction at http://www.tuxmobil.org where I extrapolated
the information pertaining to the Pavilion ze4315. Although the 4315
is an Athlon based system and the installation was done with Slackware
9.0, the similarities made it helpful. Since I kept notes on my
situation, I will take the time to post the info at TuxMobil and
Linux-on-Laptops if I can.

In any event, thanks to all who responded and those silent Gurus who
chanted the famous *nix Mantra..."RTFM...or a reasonable facsimile
thereof". ;^)
