You should have only one partition marked as bootable, otherwise the
BIOS won't know which one to boot and will give you some sort of bad
partition table message, which apparently is what happened to you.

If you installed the boot loader in you root partition, marked the
root partition bootable and marked the XP partition non-bootable,
the computer should boot with the lilo booot loader.

If you are dual booting XP and linux you can use the XP boot loader
to start linux. There is a how-to on the subject that comes with
Slackware.
