| Reading through the slapt-get F.A.Q (found here: http://software.jaos.org/BUILD/slapt-get/FAQ) I came across the following Q/A "2. Why yet another package management tool for slackware? To scratch and itch of mine, which also scratched an itch of a friend. I created it originally without looking for an existing solution. I now understand Slackware already has existing utilities that provide similar functionality. I believe slapt-get to be superior because of it's speed and simplicity. I do not believe slapt-get takes away anything from these existing tools, slapt-get can stand on it's own merits. In the end, choice is great for the end users (just as in the desktop enviroment category). Regardless, I do not aim for inclusion within Slackware. I only want to make this availabe in hopes that others will find it useful." I am particularly interested in the statement "I now understand Slackware already has existing utilities that provide similar functionality." Up to this point I have done little with regard to installing packages in Slackware. Typically I just download the source and compile it myself. Nevertheless after screwing around with Debian a bit recently I kind of got used to the convenience of the apt-get process. What is the author of the "slapt-get FAQ" refering to when he speaks of "existing utilies" that provide "similar functionality"? I'd like to check them out. |

He may be referring to swaret which is available from Slack mirrors in "extra". Great utility for upgrading. I created an alias on my home PC to do all the process in one single command : alias Swaret='sudo swaret --update && sudo swaret --upgrade' The Windows update utility on the machine I'm currently using (at work) is just crap compared with swaret... |

We had a cultural antropology paper due and had no clue what this book was saying. So he sees the guy who wrote it is a Professer at U of Texas in Austin. So he calls informatiion and ends up with the professor's number. Then calls the guy who wrote the book and he sits on the phone for like an hr. helping my friend out with his paper! I was like man. why didn't i think of that!!! Peace, Pilgrim |
