A NetMD player? Sony hasn't (and probably won't) released a Linux version of
SonicStage or similar. I believe there's a project to reverse-engineer the
NetMD protocol, but they haven't advanced to a usable state.

For a non-NetMD player just use an analog cable between the MD and soundcard
and fire up Audacity to record.

Check alt.audio.minidisc for more threads.

A lot of MD recorders (at least the non-NetMD versions) also have optical
digital inputs, so it may well be worth getting hold of a Linux-supported
soundcard with a compatible optical digital output. Ideally, you want
44.1kHz output, but if your MD unit does sample-rate conversion (SRC -
check the specs) then it will also be usable at other frequencies.

Another option might be one of the Xitel USB->optical digital output
adaptors, which are apparently supported as USB audio devices under Linux,
and output at 44.1kHz. Note, however, that Xitel have also made some
cheaper USB adaptors with only analogue output, which have no real
advantage over using the soundcard analogue output.

Note also that both these solutions only allow unidirectional music
transfer in real time, and that if you're working from a CD rather than a
music file you'll need to make sure you're using digital audio extraction
to read it (preserving the digital path).

Richard.

You need a sound card with SPDIF/optical out (unless you don't care too
much about sound quality, in which case you can do analog transfer). The
USB Soundblaster card (the "MP3+") has SPDIF in/out, and is probably your
cheapest option. You will also need an optical cable, which costs $10-15.

I stand corrected, the Chaintech card (C-media 8738 chipset) has SPDIF
in/out, and sells for only $21, including optical cable:

Does it also have optical input?:

If so, then digital transfer from a suitable soundcard or adaptor (at 1x
speed) will be possible.

Depends on the model, and if you're referring to PC => MD or MD => PC.

If your MD has a optical input (white ring around the jack) you can record
digitally from the PC with the right soundcard/adaptor.

No consumer portable can digitally upload to the PC due to the lack of an
optical output, somethig only found on professional units. The upcoming HiMD
standard will allow you to upload tracks to the PC via USB, but only with the
new HiMD discs, "regular" MDs aren't allowed to use this new path.

As for a Linux angle. . . Sony will continue its policy of non-support.
