| I have been using Mandrake linux for about a year now. I have found that I am no better at command line stuff than I was when I started. Mandrake has too many wizards and stuff, and I have fallen into the habit of using them. I have decided to make the switch to Slackware 9.1, I had a friend download and burn the iso and I am ready to go. However, I am a dial up internet user(no form of broadband in my rural community) and the machine I have only has a winmodem. It is a Lucent, and for Mandrake and other RPM based distros the rpms are easy to find. Now my understanding of Slackware is that it is not rpm based, but that several tools are available to convert rpm to the proper format for install in Slackware. I am a dairy farmer and I use my one and only computer for dairy related stuff as well as for pleasure. I cannot afford to install Slack and not have a working modem due to various business demands(I have to connect several times daily via dial up to my feed mill, etc.) So I am looking for advice on how to get this up and running as quickly as possible. I plan on installing late one night after milking, and want to make it as painless as possible. I have found the sources for the Lucent at http://www.heby.de/ltmodem and so I think that this is what I need. I would really appreciate any help with this that I can get. Thank you all in advance. -- ~marc "To be sure, conservative radio talk show hosts have a built-in audience unavailable to liberals: People driving cars to some sort of job." - Ann Coulter |

Other distros have quirks. Slackware's just pure Linux. |

It is by far one of the easier things to compile. Definitely read the 1ST-READ file, but basically from inside the source directory do: ../build_module ../ltinst2 ../autoload Then configure whatever program you use to dial out. I've been using the various versions of the ltmodem drivers from http://www.heby.de/ltmodem since Mandrake 7 and now on Slackware 9.1/current with great success. I just setup an old system for my brother that has one of those Lucent winmodems. It can be a pain to setup, that's for sure, but it works fairly well actually. -- Confucius: He who play in root, eventually kill tree.
