| I'm trying to download Slack iso's using bittorrent. I've never used it before and had heard all the hype so I decided to try it. I have to say I'm not overly impressed with the performance. I get better download speeds from the iso mirror! I figure I must have something miss-configured.. I'm behind a router but I have ports 6881-6889 forwarded! I even just plugged right into my Cable modem to see if the forwarding wasn't working properly, no dice! Seriously though I think everything is set fine and the torrent seems healthy with >30 peers. But 50k/s isn't very good seeing as I can get ~90k/s just downloading the file as per usual. From what I've read on the web people are bragging about the download being so fast that they have to cap it so they can surf.... that would be nice. TIA, Jason |

I think its a bit late to try out BitTorrent with Slackware-9.1 BitTorrent is a great tool in the days right after a release where we all can help each-other by downloading and uploading the iso. Now its 4 months after the release and there's probably not many left offering you download. > I figure I must have something miss-configured I don't think so, you are just a little late. -- Thomas O. I've now tried to use Bittorrent to download some movies etc. at SuperNova and I get the same thing... max ~50k/s which is about a third of what I can get if I just download directly. This is with >30 seeds.. basically a healthy connection. This of course is not horrible by any stretch but I guess I was expecting more as I had heard a lot about how fast Bittorrent is... although I've read into a bit more and it is similar to getting files through newsgroup headers which is extremely fast on my machine ~200k/s. So I'm not sure what gives! Cheers, Jason |

The more people using bittorrent, the better the download speed and reliability will be, not to mention it doesn't overload the master server. As ISOs trickle down to the mirrors and less people resort to bittorrent it's to be expected that it won't be as effective. |

I figure I must have something I had a try at it, and it absolutely screamed for a few seconds every time I clicked the 'update' button.
