Default Upgraded Alsa, Now sound not working

I am currently running Slackware 9.1 with a SoundBlaster Live card. I used
swaret to upgrade my alsa to the latest version and now I get an error
stating that /dev/dsp does not exist. Will use /dev/null for output. I
get this error in Gnome and KDE so i am sure that it has to do with alsa.
I found something that said alsa has to create the
files /dev/dsp, /dev/mixer, etc.

Can someone please help me with this.

Thanks in advance.

as root `chmod 666 /dev/dsp; chmod 666 /dev/mixer`
After that run alsa-config and alsa-mixer (I hope those are the right
names, just type "alsa" and hit <Tab> twice to find out).
With alsa-mixer you make sure you sound isn't muted.

Also, to add to what someone else already said in response, you could try
following the directions at www.alsa-project.org for your specific sound
card. I intentionally uninstalled my ALSA and then followed the directions
for my card, and viola! It works like a charm now. I guess my distaste
for ALSA was misplaced. But anyways, if the other suggestions don't work,
you can try following the ones at alsa-project.

I am having the same problem with upgrading from 0.9.6 to 0.9.8. I tried
to run alsaconf and it can't find the sound card on my pci slot. I tried
to go to www.alsa-project.org, but it keeps refusing my connection. Is
there another place to go to get the information?
