| I'm a bit of a noob to this distro. After spending about six hours trying to get the Apache that came on my Slackware disk to run, I gave up and installed a ...tar.gz version (without pkgtool or installpkg -- just the usual [configure/make/make install] mantra). It blasted off right away without any problems. So far, so good. My question: Is doing this kind of install likely to lead to problems later on? Is everything in Slackware supposed to be installed with the provided pkgtool or installpkg? -- cheers, el m |

Compiling and installing from source should not create any problems. For convenience and control, a lot of people use checkinstall or some other tool to create a package when installing from source. It keeps the package database complete, and makes it easy to uninstall, reinstall, upgrade, etc. -- Old Man |

I'm beginning to like Slack a lot. I never could get Mandrake to recognize my CDRW in a USB2.0 enclosure, but Slack did it with a couple of lines of code and the creation of a directory. -- cheers, el m http://www.mbstevens.com |
