| is that for real? it's from www.userlocal.com ----------------------------------------- Posted by: mRgOBLIN Thu Apr 1 00:10:53 2004 Slackware Founder announces retirement!!! In a press statement today Founder and sole developer of the Slackware Linux operating system "Patrick Volkerding", announced his retirement. "Volkerding" states that the next release of Slackware (codenamed "Porch swing") will in fact be the last. Unfortunately the highly anticipated Linux 2.6 kernel based release, previously codenamed "Terrapin station" has been cancelled. When we asked "Patrick" why he was giving up he replied: In these days of flashy installers and dependancy checking, nobody seems to want a simple reliable system that just works..." "I Need A Miracle!" or perhaps some "Young Blood" to take over this "Masterpiece" but I still feel "She Belongs To Me". "Even so" "Me & My Uncle" will be "Playin' In The Band"... Yes, it seems that "Volkerding" is taking up a career in music, and is about to start touring with a band called "Banjo Bob and the X-men". Apparently this is a 6 piece banjo band that wear spandex pyjamas and do Greatful Dead covers. Meanwhile the future of Slackware may be left out in "The Cold Rain And Snow". mRgOBLIN |

In some contries people make pranks on each other at the first of April. There is a RFC put out on that: http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc3751.html > it's from www.userlocal.com > ----------------------------------------- > > Posted by: mRgOBLIN > Thu Apr 1 00:10:53 2004 > > Slackware Founder announces retirement!!! What do you think P.V. will do with Slack? Better yet, what do YOU think he SHOULD do with it (to keep it going, obviously). Something to think about. How old is P.V.? Al |

You might have gotten away with something on April Fool's Day itself, but we've all been primed by this time. You can tell anyway. All the references to the Grateful Dead put it over the top. Patrick is a Deadhead, that's there the "darkstar" comes from, but since he's never named the Slackware versions after GD songs, why should he start now? Michael |

Doesn't mean I worry about that now. I'll deal with that eventuality when it comes around. Likewise, I'll deal with finding alternatives to Slack if and when Pat decides to stop developing. I don't really see that as much of an immediate future likelyhood, although it is a far off likely event, even if only because Linux is rendered obsolete or some such. If I spent my life worrying about far off probable events, I'd have very little time for much else. |

Unlike what happened with MS-DOS and MacOS for the 6800 processor, the information exists so that someone else can continue the development. I expect that several people will do so and that there will be a lot of debate as to which of them is following the slackware philosophy. -- Guy Macon, Electronics Engineer & Project Manager for hire. Remember Doc Brown from the _Back to the Future_ movies? Do you have an "impossible" engineering project that only someone like Doc Brown can solve? My resume is at http://www.guymacon.com/ |

I agree with others that it's premature to worry about this now. I was just interested in what others thought about the subject. My hope is that P.V. would have an heir lined up so that Slack does not "go to committee" and get splintered. To me, Slack is the last of the "small business" distros. The others are all-vol (like Deb and Gen) or big-corp like MDK, SuSE, etc.) When possible I always do business with small firms..... because I know from experince that you always get the best service and quality from them. Slack is one-guy outfit and it's his rep. that is at stake. It's not made by a group of faceless corporate clones or geek-committee members. His biz is like my biz (and maybe your biz.... small, personal, and committed to quality balanced with speed and 'newness' with respect to a distro. The man knows what he's doing and I'm happy to send him $40 each time he brings out a new version (as long as it isn't once a month!!!!!) ANC |
