| I'd really like to give gnucash a try. If it works, I can get rid of Win4Lin and Quicken. It's the only Windoze program left that I use (except once a year booting to XP to do taxes!) I've reserached this to the hilt (see below.... am I "Slacker" yet? :-)) Q: Has it gotten "easier" yet? Does anyone know if the current ver of slib (3a?) will work (now.) Has anyone had any success with the latest package on Linuxpackages? <editorial> With Quicken being the widest used financial package you'd think that either Intuit would port it to Linux... or that there would be a Linux "clone" of it. I know about Kapitol, but last time I checked, it would not run on Slack... I forget why.) cbTracker is nice, but lame in the report dept. (like the nice P&L Quicken does for you.) And Moneydance will not print with Slack... some problme with Java and cups, etc... and I think they are out of business. Maybe I should look at Wine/Crossover Office with Quicken? For now Win4Lin is OK, but I dread having to install it again.... building a kernal, and so on..... PITA. </editorial> Al ----------- http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions showthread.php?s=&threadid=140495&highlight=gnucas h http://groups.google.com groups?hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=2fe7b80f.0404070722.6871ea50 40posting.google.com http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=152991 http://rjmarq.org/gnucash.html |

I'm fairly sure that gnucash has always worked if you could get its dependencies satisfied. > Q: Has it gotten "easier" yet? It hasn't gotten any harder. If you can't find binaries that work, then you need to construct a dependency graph to aid your compilation. I suggest following the dependencies from one of the BSD ports to get an idea of where to start. jag -- Jeremy A. Gray gray@metacomet.net "Remember the Pueblo." -- the Fourth Law of Marvin |

Never herad of that one. Anyway, I spent an hour this PM with CB-Tracker and it's come a long way since I saw it last. It still does not have a good P&L report, but other than that, it does most of what I need. I'd still like to have gnucash, but I don't have the time to fight with the install. I did my research and decided it's just not worth it at this time. Al |

It's getting better and better, the developer is very responsive to problems and there is a nice mailing list. It handles my checkbook and online banking very nicely. It also handles stocks although I haven't tried that. Before I discovered MoneyDance I nearly became a slave of Quicken after my 15 year old CheckFree dos program was discontinued. It's a java program that runs on most platforms - of course I use it on Slack. |

Does it print? The last demo version I tried would not print with CUPS and Slackware. Maybe this is fixed? Al |

There are a lot of dependencies, and I have trouble compiling some of the recent gnome stuff because I'm not using the most recent library X (more often than not it's libgnomeprint and libgnomeprintgui.) I avoid this by not pointlessly compiling things I don't need. I'm not in the loop but I think the Gnucash people are working now to port Gnucash entirely to Gnome2; right now it needs _some_ Gnome 1 files, but they can live alongside Gnome2 stuff-for the most part. I liked Gnucash enough to abandon Quicken. Intuit stinks anyway. Google for it; there's a site out there that covers in explicit detail the installation. You'll need some files frome either 8.0 or 8.1 in addition to 9.1. It's work alright but I don't care. If I did I'd use, Oh, I don't know, SuSE or something. Here, I'll do some of the work for ya: http://rjmarq.org/gnucash.html Enjoy, r |

You might ask on their mailing list. Austin |

I think this is a result of installing the lprNG package which probably overwrites the lpc symlink. To fix it, simply change the /usr/sbin/lpc symlink back to point to /usr/sbin/lpc-cups. It's not a Moneydance problem, but it is the kind of thing that may not show up in other programs (unless they are also written in Java). |

| Here is the answer I received from the MD folks. Both are named "Reilly" so maybe they are borthers!!!! :-) Anyway, here is what they sent me and my comment below. Dear Mr. Canton, The problem is in Slackware, or more specifically, the lpr-ng or CUPS installer. *Here is what we did to fix it: * *1) Remove the lpr-ng package (using kpackage) * *2) Run "su" or "sudo -s" from a terminal window to login as root, then run the following three commands: cd /usr/sbin rm lpc ln -s lpc-cups lpc What this does is to remove the "lpc" program that currently points to the lpr-ng version of lpc and set the "lpc" program to print to the CUPS version of lpc (the way it should have been, before). *Since Java programs (including Moneydance) use the "lpc" program to figure out what printers are available, Java printing was not working because the "lpc" program wasn't working correctly. *Please try the steps above and let me know if it works for you. Yours truly, J.C. Reilly Moneydance Support Specialist ------------- One of the "problems" with the Slack 9.1 installer is that it allows you to install both lpring and CUPS and these sometimes conflict. On most of my apps I have to change "lpr" to "lpr-cups". I'm not sure why, but it works. Maybe the above will help.... but then I'll have to change all my apps back!!! I wish that the Slack installer had some warnings to just installl one or the other print systems. Al |
