Default help with Konqueror file browsing annoyance

I have Slackware 9.1 with KDE 3.1.4. When I use Konqueror to browse
directories an odd thing happens: If I click once on a folder and then
move the mouse away from the folder, the folder acts as if it is being
dragged--so I have to move the mouse back to the folder and click to
deselect or else choose cancel from the pop-up menu that appears if I
click elsewhere. I would expect this behavior to occur only when the mouse
is pressed and held. I adjusted different settings in the Control Center,
but nothing seems to stop this from happening. This behavior doesn't seem
to have a control setting. If this is a "feature" I don't like it and
would like the option of turning it off. I have an optical MS intelliMouse
but do not believe it's hardware or driver related. Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem.... and have had it ever since I installed Slack 9.1,
KDE 3.14. I've asked this on the KDE group comp.windows.x.kde a half dozen
times and have never had a response.

You can also press the ESC key to get rid of the "moving" folder icon.

I've learned to live with the problem. I never had it with MDK KDE 2.2. It's
the ONLY thing that is wrong with my Slack install. Everything else works
perfectly except Konqueror's mouse/icon management. Not a big deal.... but
still....it would be nice to not have this annoyance.

Maybe someone has a suggestion. I've looked for it since last Sept. and so far
no luck.

Al

One thing you might try is go to control center -> peripherals -> mouse
->advanced and adjust the drag start time and drag start distance. This
might or might not effect your problem but it is where I would go if I had
this problem.

No luck. I think it is a bug with 3.1.4 on some distro because there is
reference to it in Google Groups... but no one has ever found the fix.

Well I've never really liked any of the KDE file utilities very much.

Gentoo is very powerful and highly configurable. I also just installed
a new one from sourceforge...
===========================================
http://krusader.sourceforge.net/home.php

Krusader is an advanced twin-panel (commander-style) file-manager for
KDE 3.x (similar to Midnight or Total Commander) but with many extras.
It provides all the file-management features you could possibly want.

Plus: extensive archive handling, mounted filesystem support, FTP,
advanced search module, viewer/editor, directory synchronisation, file
content comparisons, powerful batch renaming and much much more.

It supports the following archive formats: tar, zip, bzip2, gzip, rar,
ace, arj and rpm and can handle other KIOSlaves such as smb or
fish.
It is (almost) completely customizable, very user friendly, fast and
looks great on your desktop! :-)
============================================

I like this one so far a lot.

Control Center -> Peripherals -> Mouse
Under General, in the "Icons" area, hit "Double click to open files and
folders"

Make sure that's set.

I can't think of anything else.

Thank you all for replying to my message. I've only recently switched to
GNU/Linux, though a couple years back I did try Slack 7.1 on the old
Micron P-133 1.6HD 80MB RAM I was using at the time (thankfully I have a
much better machine now). This time I plan to stick with Linux. I like
the spirit in which Slackware operates!

Anyway, it seems my Konqueror file browsing annoyance has stopped for the
time being. Prior to my original post I had tried the different mouse
settings in the General and Advanced tabs for the mouse within the Control
Center. I did have Double Click set in the Icons, but the problem was
still occuring. I had also made changes to the Drag Start settings etc.
in the Advanced tab thinking that was the culprit, but that didn't seem to
make a difference either. I didn't know about hitting the ESC key to
cancel the moving folder, so thanks for that tip--it does help with the
frustration.

Today anyhow, the problem has stopped. My advanced settings for the mouse
are all default and I've checked it logged in as root and as other users.
Perhaps the problem is a bug resulting after a specific sequence of
events. I also tried different view modes to get it to reoccur, but so
far it seems gone. I'll key my eye open and try to notice what happens
prior to the problem if it resurfaces. Thanks again everyone. (I'm also
new to posting, so I hope this reply gets posted in the correct place.)

I found a way to get the behavior to reoccur, but only for a one mouse
click duration. Perhaps this could be useful in pinpointing some code:

two methods:

(1)If you open Konqueror via the WebBrowser and press F9 to show
navigation panel, then click on a folder once, as you move the mouse the
folder will move with you. Subsequent clicks are normal.

(2)If you open Konqueror via the blue house FileBrowser and click on the
Home URL icon, then clicking on a folder will produce the same result.

I say separate the apps...why merge them anyway? All this web style
integration into the desktop seems miss directed. Did Micro$oft start
this trend?

With me if you click on any folder you get the icon attached to the mouse.
After you press ESC it does not happen again until you close and re-open
Konq. PITA.
