You could download just slackware-current/slackware, and of that, pick and choose just what you plan to install. It's not necessary to burn it to CD to be able to install it. I generally use NFS installs (boot a CD but use an NFS server as the source for installation packages.) If you do want a CD for some reason, you can get ./isolinux and some of ./kernels. In any case you'll need the ramdisk and some means of booting, like a bootdisk. The ramdisk can be had from ./rootdisks in floppy-sized formats, or just use the ./isolinux/initrd.img and boot it from your boot loader (LILO or GRUB or DOS+loadlin.exe.) > 9.2, but don't like the rpm crap. i didn't know the current was not > considered a stable release. -current is not a release, period. It is the "current" state of the next release, which is presently under development. > is the 2.6 kernel in this current version? ftp://$FTP_MIRROR_SITE/slackware-current/kernels/VERSIONS.TXT would tell you that. Our own Wild Wizard here maintains the best list of Slackware FTP mirror sites. > should i go to 9.1 iso? i am downloading over a 56k system so we are > talking 75 hours to download this. i don't want to grab the wrong one. Hmmm. The fact that you're new, and coming from the likes of Mandrake, makes it rather difficult to advise. It's simpler to have CD's, and to have working ones, at that. 9.1 is certainly the EASY way to go. But it is getting a bit stale by now. Good luck; if you have questions, feel free to ask. -- /dev/rob0 - preferred_email=i$((28*28+28))@softhome.net or put "not-spam" or "/dev/rob0" in Subject header to reply |
