Default [OT] Murphy revisited.

Good day, computer users!
[start crazy story]
A set of two boxes networked (x-over) and both running Slack 9.0 for a
year or so. Internet shared. No problems.
About two month ago the gateway was "upgraded(?)" to 9.1 and works well.
Few days ago the second box, which is used infrequently, tried to join
internet sharing and failed.
So we go to check, host file perfect, resolve.config good, ping no joy.
OK fire up Win98se on the "upgraded" box and pinging works in both
directions. SOOOOOOO.
Lets try Linux (Mandrake), card is recognised, files rewritten but no
pinging.
[/end crazy story]

As those configurations are done infrequently I of course cannot recall
if and how those little hickups were treated.

Does this ring a bell? If so any advice?
(One option, for me was to "degrade" to 9.0)

TIA

What module does the net-card use (does lsmod list it, or have you built it
in to the kernel)? What does ifconfig say? Were you pinging IP addresses or
machine names?

That should be enough to keep you busy for a while

The same one as before eepro100.

Have not consulted lsmod and it is "vanilla" kernel, actually not, I
changed for .s kernel to help with my SCSI CD burner.

Like about 10 minutes now, looked into my /boot directory and found two
kernel images, decided to direct lilo to "the other one", rebooted
MS-Glassware style - when in panic, and lo and behold, route found the
network configuration. (Don't know about SCSI, will check later).

Will have more info later, after the owner of the other box opens it.
I don't remember his passwords.(:-0)

I still like Slackware.

Murphy said "C'ya" and left for greener fields!

Stanislaw.
One satisfied Slacker.

IINM the eepro100 driver is being phased out in favour of an Intel-
maintained replacement, e100.

What can be done, it worked in past and still does?

Thanks anyway.

Confused me. The solution works but does not make sense.
One of many reasons we are with this distro, you can make things work
that would confuse an army of wizards. My Mandrake 9.2 install is a good
case. Maybe the DOS relation of Win98SE has something to do with it
performing where "newest, fastest, greater" OS's got into temporary
troubles.
It also may help when you are an "old stubborn" computer user who _will_
spent time on "impossible" solutions.

Having fun.
