Default detect hard drive

How can I detect if a systems hard disk is
/dev/sda or /dev/hda or other, I need this to detect
before booting up, i'm making a install cd to automatically
install linux onto a hard drive?

generically, the operation is called 'probing'.
slackware has dprobe, found deep inside of the
usual slackware initrd image.

or, an enhanced version is available:

ftp://prv8.net/slackstuff/dprobe
