I have the FB in console capability compiled. IMHO the disadvantages of
using it outeigh the advantage of seeing the penguin. For one I prefer to
see *all* my boot messages as they scroll by and you lose some using VGA
mode. OTOH in regular test mode you can just hit SHIFT-Page Up and go to
the top of the messages. Dmesg does not give me the same exact output.

IOW, my logs in /var/log, shift-page up and dmesg all have slightly more
or less information. Shift-Page Up gives the most useful for my purposes.

Even worse is the damn splash screen that Mandrake uses. First thing I
did with that distro is get rid of that crap.

But the real issue is do you *need* VGA in a text console (not in
Xas they are resizable anyway). If so go for it. If not, IMO it's useless.

Remove XFree86 and install X.org.
You can use the XF86Config file.
Rename it xorg.conf.

I don't live in that kind of fantasy world. I know better! Nothing
is perfect.

Thanks for the reply although.

I use the generic VESA framebuffer with the Nvidia.com binary-only
drivers. I don't find I have any problems with this combination.

The FB also allows you to view pictures[1] and have graphics in console
applications [2].

[1] You can use fbi to view pictures: <http://linux.bytesex.org/fbida/>
[2] 'links -g -driver fb' will give you a graphical web browser.
