| Hello, I see some people already switched to X.org. Do you see significant difference in "visible" performance, CPU and memory usage between XFree and X.org? I wonder if I should switch to X.org too, but for now XFree works just fine for me. regards, jkb -- Jacek K. Błaszkowski GAT/L/MU d+ s+:+ a-- C++$ UL++$ US+> P L++ E--- W+ N++ o+ K- w+$ O? M> V? But I don't do gameing. /Jens -- Slackware-current | CRUX-1.3.1 PPC | udev |

(Although I haven't done any proper tests, just looked at top.) Responsiveness and application loading times look to be the same also. > I wonder if I should switch to X.org too, but for now XFree works > just fine for me. I only changed over as I keep up with -current. -- Mark Hill <usenet@mark.ukfsn.org> GPG KeyID: 4A3B58AC |

Somebody mentioned possible issues with nvidia, but I have'nt seen any (ut2004 looks perfec). Also, the /etc/X11/XF86Config is now /etc/X11/xorg.conf as already mentioned, but I just used my old XF86Config so really its no bother at all. AFAIK xorg have fixed many bugs which xfree did not, so for some people xorg is going to be even more stable anyway. |

I'm using the nvidia driver with a TNT2 M64. > oh and the config file has changed name .... ffs Yeah, but this can be remedied quite quickly with cp, ln or mv at least. -- Mark Hill <usenet@mark.ukfsn.org> GPG KeyID: 4A3B58AC |

I use the kernel tainting modules from nvidia here with Xfree86. I'd indeed like to know what to expect with the nvidia prop. drivers and x.org. Can anyone comment? Hopefully, by the time the next version of Slack shows up, issues (if any) relating to nvidia and x.org will be cleared up. Max -- ____ ____ ____ ||M |||A |||X || ||__|||__|||__|| |/__\|/__\|/__\| |

IIUIC, the problems that people have been reporting switching between X and the VC while running the NVIDIA proprietary drivers have generally been attributed to some conflict between the NVIDIA X driver and the rivafb driver. Anyone have comments on that? Anyone running a plain VGA console and *still* having problems? I'd like to know, because I've been holding off on upgrading to the newest version of the evil NVIDIA binary-only driver for just this reason but, if the VC switching problem truly doesn't affect those who run a raw VGA console, then I should be OK. ciao, Jonathan -- Don't just hit reply.
