| Rich Grise <null@example.net> says... (snip) Please don't quote the enire spam. Most users don't see the original spam because of ISP spam filtering and spam cancelling, so the spammer hopes that someone will quote the entire spam. |

And if the original article was cross-posted then continue the cross-posting or just don't respond at all except with a complaint to the abuser's ISP. |

| Did I give any other indications that I was hallucinating when I wrote this? Because I don't remember writing it. I don't even _talk_ like that! Thanks, Rich (IOW, please double-check attributions, thanks.) Well, *sombody* posted it from [4.11.179.74] and with your Path... Does someone else have physical access to your computer? Are you running an unsecured wireless network? >(IOW, please double-check attributions, thanks.) I just did. My attribution was correct. You quoted an entire spam (and top-posted). Here is a copy of that post (I obfuscated the URLs and bank account numbers so that this post cannot benefit the spammer they way yours did.) ------------------------------------------------------------------- Path: supernews.com!64.59.134.4.MISMATCH!pd7cy1no!shaw.c a!border1.nntp.dca.giganews.com!border2.nntp.dca.g iganews.com!nntp.giganews.com!cyclone1.gnilink.net !spamkiller.gnilink.net!gnilink.net!nwrddc02.gnili nk.net.POSTED!dd653b87!not-for-mail From: "Rich Grise" <null@example.net> Newsgroups: alt.os.linux.slackware References: <1087682249.575528@smtp.tvcom.ru> Subject: Re: wanna do a good thing? | Oh, _that_ spam. BTW, how does quoting what you're responding to (which you seem to have done as well) "benefit the spammer?" And didn't anybody get the joke, for heaven't sakes? Thanks, Rich But I see you've excised (for this response) "Guy Macon" <http://www.guymacon.com> wrote in message news:10ddcuva28t958b@corp.supernews.com... > > Rich Grise <null@example.net> says... > > > >Did I give any other indications that I was hallucinating when I wrote > >this? | Rich Grise <null@example.net> says... >Oh, _that_ spam. You can apologize for saying that I was wrong now... Yes. That Spam. The one that you quoted in full. The one that you didn't realize that you had quoted in full because I purposely didn't quote anything from your post - after all, you keep saying things like "Yes, but if you're following the thread, you've just read that post." But you *didn't* just read that post when you replied, did you? You are quite simply wrong when you make such claims. >BTW, how does quoting what you're responding to (which you seem >to have done as well) "benefit the spammer?" [1] Spammer spams. [2] Rich Grise quotes spam in full, including where to send the money and what web page to go to to get more info. [3] Spam is canceled and filtered by most news servers. [4] Rich Grise's reply is not canceled or filtered, so the spammer's message is read by many more people. When I quoted your post (as a result of you forgetting that you sent it; how can that be if you "just read that post" as you claim always happens?) I obfuscated the part that says where to send the money and what web page to go to to get more info. Thus I, unlike you, did not advertise the spammer's services. >And didn't anybody get the joke, for heaven't sakes? Having someone flame me without cause over what should be a civil discussion on an issue we disagree about tends to make me less receptive to that person's jokes. |

In your superior wisdom, you're protecting future readers from seeing a link that you have deemed that they need to be protected from. Like, you're treating people like children who don't know to click on a link in an obvious spam. Now, if you'd said that somehow it triggers some machine-driven additional spam or something, it might be worth looking into, but come on. Sheesh! Rich |

I apologize if I seemed condescending. That was not my intent. Yes, I do believe in doing whatever I can to protect others from being exposed to the advertising that is in most spam. Passing along that payload does trigger additional spam (I am not sure why you think that it being machine-driven or not is important). When advertising works, the advertiser advertises more. When it doesn't, he doesn't. The fact of the matter is that many people *are* "children who don't know to click on a link in an obvious spam." If it were not so, spamming would not be profitable. Alas, it only takes a tiny percent to make the spam run pay off. |
