It is more than a name, it is a registered trademark, if you click on the small part at the foot of the page on the www.slackware.com web site yoiu will find this warning, I have only quoted the parts that appear to be relevant : "...3. Except by written permission from Slackware Linux, Inc., the Slackware trademark may not be used as (or as part of) a product name, company name, or registered domain name. 4. Any approved use of "Slackware" must be followed by a circle-R, and must acknowledge our ownership of the mark..." -- Two Ravens "...hit the squirrel..." |

Does that mean I have to have their permission to put something like "Powered by Slackware(R)" on my website? Thanks, Rich |

You can get the proper ® from the Character Selector that comes with KDE, I don't know what's available with any of the other wm's desktops as I don't use them. I do have a friend who is a Patent/Trademark Copyright attourney, but we are both in England so the law may not be the same. -- Two Ravens "...hit the squirrel..." |

Legally, yes. But then, legally you aren't allowed to tape a TV show without permmission. I doubt Pat will do something that basically qualifies as Slackware propoganda. I'd guess that he's more concerned about people hijacking the name and then muscling him off his own intellectual property. - -- George Georgakis geegATtripleg_net_au http://www.tripleg.net.au/ SlackBuild Central - http://slackpack.tripleg.net.au/ -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: PGPfreeware 6.5.8 for non-commercial use <http://www.pgp.com> iQA/AwUBQNyBuklp3nJf7PixEQLRCQCg+mvZUoRkUPljCKdl1a6i5L qgQnAAoOb7 vNm54JtYRuFUfX8KM/GS6FM8 =OY2S -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

No permission required. That usage is using the trademarked Slackware name to refer to Slackware itself, not some product or service of yours. Whether the (R) (or a proper trademark symbol or "Slackware is a registered trademark of..." or other variations) is required is less clear. Some web sites just put "All trademarks used on this web site are the the property of their respective owners" buried in a "legal" page. -- Guy Macon, Electronics Engineer & Project Manager for hire. Judging by <http://slackware.com/trademark/trademark.php> I would agree. It looks like he's more concerned about distro spin-offs than anything else. -- Mark Hill <mrhill@gmail.com> |
