| I've searched.really do I have to do a new install of 10? I see some talking about just using Swaret to upgrade all the packages but others say it won't find any new packages added to 10. |

There are a couple of packages that have been removed from 10.0 as well as a couple that are new. -- Confucius: He who play in root, eventually kill tree. You can upgrade in place if you want. See UPGRADE.TXT on your favourite Slackware mirror. > I see some talking about just using Swaret to upgrade all the packages > but others say it won't find any new packages added to 10. AFAIK, it will (although I've never used swaret.) It might not upgrade the X packages however (due to the name change from XFree to X11). You can use removepkg and installpkg to fix this. -- Mark Hill <mrhill@gmail.com> |

There's a lot of opinions concerning swaret, I'll spare you from hearing mine. As for upgrading, the tried and true method in my opinion is still to back-up /etc, /home, /usr/local, and anything you put in /opt, then do a format and a fresh re-install. For this purpose I typically put /home and /usr/local on their own seperate partitions, since that makes it easier to upgrade in this way. Several people have reported no problems with swaret upgrades, and several people have. I think it's about a 2 to 1 ratio in swaret's favor at the moment, but that's entirely anecdotal. I wouldn't touch swaret with a ten foot pole myself. It's up to you how you do it. I'm not certain that swaret "does the right thing" on a few packages like x11r6-7 and elflibs. The former could just be installed right alongside xfree86, and the latter shouldn't be upgraded at all. - -- It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, Than for a man to hear the song of fools. | Well, Eugene, it's been about a day and you got four replies, none of which had the slightest hint of "Flaming the noob." It looks like your implied accusation that newbies get flamed was unfounded. See [ http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html ] to see why.
