Default segmentation fault after memory upgrade - kde?

I just upgraded memory (from 64 mb, to 128mb) in an old slackware box
(9.1) that I use to run simple cronjobs. Everything seems to run fine
except that when I try to run kde (3.1.4), I get a segmentation fault
error. I ran memtest86 and the ram seems okay, so I was wondering if
there were any config or startup files that I need to change to
correct the problem, or if anyone has any other suggestions as to
where I should be looking. Everything else runs fine. I don't really
use kde much on that box anyway, but it's driving me crazy now...

Thanks for any help,

AvidFan

-sounds- like a classic ram failure... invent and apply some hardware
diagnostic procedures: remove the new stick and try again. if the
problem persists, it's not the new stick. if it passes, then the
new stick may be bad. continue testing: shutdown, swap the old
stick out, the new stick in, and try again. if it fails that, then
the new stick is definately suspect. if it passes, the test is
inconclusive. either way, hardware testing via component swapping
is not entirely reliable, so repeat the entire series a second time
to increase confidence in relults.

sometimes the problem is simply an improper incomplete insertion.
remove the suspect stick + carefully reinsert. try the new stick
in a different slot, if one is available. sometimes just swapping
the position of two sticks can clear a problem.

some old buggy bios might have problems. check your cmos config
to see that all installed ram is in fact reported. check that you
are not using any OS/2 ram option. check that ram timing options
are set to 'safe' defaults or slower.

finally, read /usr/doc/BootPrompt-HOWTO and review the 'mem='
facility. with both sticks in machine, try 'mem=64M'. then
increase 'mem=' until it fails, or you get to mem=128M.

have fun, and please report back what works for you.

Try it here: http://www.memtest86.com/

You can even download a bootable iso to record in a CD-ROM, boot it and run
the test. Leave it for all tests for *some* hours (12 - 24 etc).

Good luck!

Regards!

Well, it was bad memory. After reseating, cleaning, etc, nothing
worked until I just put differernt sticks in...

Thanks
