Default DVD-R Linux Backup?

isit possible to back up the whole / onto a DVD-R and if anything goes
wrong just copy the CD to / ?
sorry for being a noob, but i am a noob..

Certainly, but you need to be 'outside the system'. You should not back up
an active filesystem. If you want to take a snapshot image of / therefore,
you will need to periodically shutdown the system to give a static /
filesystem and then boot up a copy of linux which uses a ramdisk or another
hard-disk partition as the root filesystem.

From there, you can back up your normal root partition to your heart's
content.

Hint: start with the slackware installation boot CD. Change the initrd
image to include your backup-tools of choice. Test using CD-RW's rather
than CD-R's.

No offense but that would be a very stupid backup solution, although
it might be possibe.

Create a Norton Ghost bootflop, burn the image + ghost to a blank
DVD-R and you're in business :-)
