Hi, I am running Slack 10.0 on a umsdos filesystem. Installed it from Zipslack (which is on CD 4 of the distribution). See http://www.slackware.com/zipslack/ and http://www.slackware.com/zipslack/install.php I also have Windows 98 on my PC. I installed Slack 10 from file zipslack.zip in folder C:\linux whilst running Windows. Configure the file C:\linux\linux.bat to suit your disk drive configuration Then start the PC in DOS mode, and boot Linux by running the file C:\linux\linux.bat Having got Zipslack installed, running and configured to see my CD drive and network, I installed most other packages - compiler, X, Gnome, KDE... -using installpkg. And also downloaded and installed OpenOffice. All running happily on umsdos file system on 350Mhz Pentium II. Then setup the PC to have selectable dual-boot - Windowsor Linux - by configuring C:\config.sys See http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-mini/...n95-98-ME.html Good luck... in directory linux.on my C; I also have Winodws 98alongside Windows 98. First thing I did was to intsall Zipslack - it's on CD4 of the distribution.

Thanks for anwsering, yeah i alrealy know zipslack is based on the old doslinux, and diliux "dlx" well is not really customizatble as the full one , and plus if you know how to do the umsdos thing like i need to, you can do it with other distro, "redhat, debian" alrealy able to be booted from loadlin.exe, and soon freebsd will be hehe that why i wanna know how to, so you can have 4 distro like c:\linux1 c:\linux2 c:\linux3 etc etc zipslack limit you to c:\linux that it you have other idea im open to hear On Thu, 22 Jul 2004 23:23:59 +0100, "geep" <geep(at)boursorama(dot)com> wrote: >Hi, >I am running Slack 10.0 on a umsdos filesystem. >Installed it from Zipslack (which is on CD 4 of the distribution). >See http://www.slackware.com/zipslack/ and >http://www.slackware.com/zipslack/install.php >I also have Windows 98 on my PC. >I installed Slack 10 from file zipslack.zip in folder C:\linux whilst >running Windows. >Configure the file C:\linux\linux.bat to suit your disk drive configuration >Then start the PC in DOS mode, and boot Linux by running the file >C:\linux\linux.bat >Having got Zipslack installed, running and configured to see my CD drive and >network, >I installed most other packages - compiler, X, Gnome, KDE... -using >installpkg. >And also downloaded and installed OpenOffice. >All running happily on umsdos file system on 350Mhz Pentium II. > >Then setup the PC to have selectable dual-boot - Windowsor Linux - by >configuring C:\config.sys >See http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-mini/...n95-98-ME.html > >Good luck... > > > > in directory linux.on my C; I also have Winodws 98alongside Windows 98. >First thing I did was to intsall Zipslack - it's on CD4 of the distribution. > >

Ah - now I think I understand. You want to try to install several different linuxes in directories like c:\linux1 c:\linux2 etc... I also wanted to do that, but I don't think that it's possible. (I tried it - it didn't work). (But if somebody else knows how to I'd like to know). The HOW-TO - http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/doc...SDOS-HOWTO.pdf - says in 3.1 "All Linux files are created in a DOS subdirectory called linux," and doesn't mention any alternative name possibility. I took a quick look at the source code from http://packages.qa.debian.org/u/umsdos.html, and it seems that the directory name "linux" (and length - 5) are hard-coded in umsdos_fs.h as UMSDOS_PSDROOT_NAME (and UMSDOS_PSDROOT_LENGTH) Maybe change UMSDOS_PSROOT_NAME and create a new version of umsdos for each Linux you want to install ? (Personally I don't want to risk trashing my filesystem, so I am not going to try this). Else create a new DOS partition for each version - resulting in D:\linux, E:\linux etc. I have both Slack9.1 and Slack10 installed on umsdos, and just change the directory name from linux9 or linux10 to linux (in DOS) before I boot to linux. Not elegant - but it works. I did think about setting up multi-boot from config.sys (Win98, Slaxk9, Slack10) and writing a script in autoexec.bat to automate the changing of directory names. (You probably need a way to remember which version of Linux was booted last). But I didn't pursue this, but I think it's less risky than changing umsdos_fs.h and recompiling.
