Has anyone got any ideas?

Use alsamixer to "unmute"
Use alsactrl to save settings.

Maybe you could supply us with more to-the-point information?
Like, did you look at the boot messages on screen? Are you using alsa
(I think so)? Then sound is muted by default - try running alsaconf or
alsamixer to unmute sound channels and run "alsactl store" to save
your changed settings.
