Well, I've perused a bunch of sound related messages and am still confused
as to what I ought to do to get my sound working. I've rebuilt my kernel
several times with a bazillion sound-related items enabled (nearly all of
them at this point) but still no sound... my mobo should have this...

"built in VT82C686A Direct Sound AC97 via VT1611A codec, hardware

but lsmod gives...

Hmmm, maybe I was wrong about the sound. I think it might be AC97 Audio.

But it still isn't working. :/

How would I do this? When I use make menuconfig I do not see anything so
specific as this in the sound section.

I compiled in sound, and i8xx support. Saw the audio initialization stuff
go by during boot and it looked good to me. But still no sound.

alsaconf gives me zip.
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

Feh. I'll just go buy a $12 sound card and be done with this pain.

Hmmm. Just to make it more interesting... sound seems to work fine for
KDE and not GNOME. >:/
