Default slack 10 vmlinuz-generic-2.6.7 sound

I have installed the kernel vmlinuz-generic-2.6.7 that came with the
Slackware 10 4 cd set. The configuration file for that kernel shows
that

'CONFIG_SND is not set'.

I have installed the alsa modules from disk 2 and everything is there
to operate my sound card. When I load the right module and run
alsaconf it finds my sound card but when I get no sound, and when I
try to run alsamixer I get an error message.

My lengthy effort at compiling a new 2.6.7 kernel have been
unsuccessful. Is there a module that I can load that will get around
this problem?

Sound works ok on my system with vmlinuz-ide-2.4.26
Thanks, JWC

I had a similar problem. I have a soundcard and a tv-card in the same box
and this caused a lot of problem with alsa. I removed all alsa packages and
compiled new ones of an older version 0.9.8. Alsa-driver, alsa-lib,
alsa-oss and alsa-utils. then it all worked.I also use kernel 2.6.7 and
this configuration works perfect.
