| OK this is really starting to piss me off, A LOT. I had a cheapo 2 computer kvm switch with built in cables and it worked great switching between my windows 2000 box and my slackware box. For my birthday a buddy bought me a 4 computer kvm switch so I could switch between my windows 2000, and 2 linux boxes. Well the fucked up thing is it doesnt work correctly. If i switch over to the linux box and its in a terminal with no X running I can type just fine and do anything but if I start X I lose the keyboard and mouse. Nothing has changed from when the 2 computer kvm was working just fine with this setup. Is there some reason this kvm would refuse to allow the keyboard/mouse to work through it? Can I change something? Im about to switch back to the 2 port junker but it seems a little sad to have to go from a nicer switch to a cheaper one because it works. Im stumped since it does seem to allow the keyboard to work only shits when I start X which makes me think its somehow a driver issue with X or an incompatabity which seems rare since the settings worked just fine with the previous 2 port kvm. Please help this is driving me up the fucking wall and I need to be able to switch back and fourth between win2k and X on the linux box |

I had a similar problem with a Belkin Omni switch a few years ago. What I found was in X the mouse setting of "Auto" was the culprit. Once I selected a specific protocol, IM2/PS2/whatever, it worked fine. Jim -- Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum viditur. |

Took me a second to change my thinking since xorg.conf is a tiny bit different then XF86Config. Changed it to IMPS/2 and same deal no mouse or keyboard when starting X |

I already use ssh to get into the box and kill the x session which happily sits there with the screensaver running. |

StarTech's shipping department sucks though, so if you buy from them it can take and awful long time before it gets delivered. KVM switches that have external power (don't draw their power from the PS/2 and VGA ports on the computers) tend to work well as a rule. I have yet though, to find a KVM switch that worked with the 2.6 kernel. Everytime I change computers on it, then go back to linux, the mouse is screwed. Acts like the wrong protocol was set for it. This happens in both X and gpm. Why it works with the 2.4 kernel on the same machines is a mystery that I haven't yet solved. - -- It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, Than for a man to hear the song of fools. It happens with widopes and GNU/Linux equally and thus I'm stumped. However I found in KDE the keyboard is not fully lost - pressing ALT F1 brings up the pop up menu. From there I select start new session (3rd from bottom of menu) and when that starts a second x session - miracle of miracles, the mouse is operational again and so is keyboard. Then I log out of the new seession and go back to my original session and hey presto the mouse and keyboard works there too. |

At work I have a user which had one Linux box and one XP box with a 2 computer kvm switch. When he also needed an NT box we bought him a 4 computer kvm switch. This new switch worked fine with the XP box and the Linux box, however, there were troubles with the NT box. The NT box however worked fine with the 2 port kvm switch. The ugly solution was the following: The 4-port KVM is connected to the Linux-box and the XP-box and the 2-port KVM, the fourth port isn't used. The 2-port KVM sits between the 4-port KVM and the NT-box, the second port on that KVM isn't used. This way all computers work fine and he only has to switch computers with the 4-port KVM. regards Henrik -- The address in the header is only to prevent spam.
