| Hi everybody! We are animals of certain habits and we like it that way. For few years I was using GUI on Slackware the "scotich" way, namely xfce as window manager from the times of boxen poor on resources by todays standards. Few days ago a MS-Word (doc)ument arrived on my box and I decided to view it in Linux. But my xfce4 was not "menued" to call Abiword so I invoked "gnome-session" and it did the works. As this box is "rich" on resources and I liked it I switched to to gnome. [UFO part] Like every other day I started browsing the web with the resident Mozilla. It struck me as VERY strange but responses of sites and cleaning of news-groups from expired articles seemed to pick up considerable. [/UFO part] What is going on? The same hardware, the same dial-up connection, the same ISP. Has boolean logic gone crazy? (HELP....) Waiting! Stanislaw Slack user from Ulladulla. |

While XFce requires gnome libraries, it's not gnome. My guess is that these GTK apps run better/faster in the actual Gnome environment, similar to how runnig any KDE app outside of KDE seems to involve the loading of the entire KDE desktop with the exception of kicker. A similar phenomenon is true in windows with the preloading of IE and Office. Mozilla now does the same (or offers it as an option at install) to make the browser load faster in windows. I must admit I don't mind that option on my win2000 box at work - tho with 512 MB of ram on a P4, I don't miss the resources. Then again it could be aliens.... |

This reminds me of the I was vacationing in the Bahamas with some freinds of mine. I had spent the whole day body surfing at the beach. We went to dinner that night and, while laughing, a significant stream of sea water poured out of my sinuses, out my nose, and onto my plate. It proved quite disturbing to some people sitting next to us, but I felt the fish was in need of some salt anyway. |
