I got right up to step 4 and then it wouldn't let me go any further. I
selected "Configure" and the menu just reset.

man ln

Basically you need to use the "-s" option. Of course, that isn't
necessary. You could jsut mv those files into their respective places
and be done with it if you wish.

Okay, I get it. System.map and config are symbolic links. I just looked in
my /boot directory and vmlinuz seems to be a copy of vmlinuz-ide-2.4.26
rather than a symbolic link. Can I make vmlinuz a symbolic link also or
should it be a copy of the new kernel?

Same here, but it makes sense.

I went back and did select target and select source. Now when you select
configure, 'setup' will understand your hardware.

You will eventually get to choose the kernel and on to three-finger-salute!

Hell I don't know. Try it and if it breaks you'll know.

Is acpi worth the effort?

I don't know either. But there has been two different methods suggested
to do this.

I just did one that involves booting from the install CD.

1. Boot from the CD as if you are doing a new install

2. login and run setup as usual

3. on the menu select:
a. target, and then proceed to,
b. source, but do not proceed to selecting packages, cancel back to menu
c. Configure. When prompted, don't overwrite your existing fstab.

I believe you will now have a message to ctl-alt-del. Do it.
