Default I've just mounted a FAT partition user-writable. :-)

I'd heard it can be done, but the man page is a little confusing for
my little headbone, so I started going through groups.google.com, and
somebody answered it for me:

/dev/hda8 /E vfat defaults,umask=0000 0 0

I haven't tried user-mountable yet, but that's a different issue,
and it gets mounted automagically at boot time anyway.

Cheers!
Rich

You do know that this mounts it so any Tom, Dick, and Harry can access
it don't you? While this typically isn't a problem with linux machines
with vfat filesystems (these tend to be desktops dual-booting Windows
behind a NAT router/firewall) being a little paranoid never hurts.

/dev/hda8 /E vfat rw,user,gid=100 0 0

Yeah, that was mentioned a couple of times, and I've opted for security
by obscurity. There's nothing on our whole LAN worth bothering to
hack into, except for the adware that the head luser keeps clicking on,
while logged in as administrator. So he does a sweep every now and then
and cleans it off his box until the next round. ;-) But AFAIK, that's
the kind of stuff that you'd need a whole proxy server to try to block,
isn't it?

Thanks,
Rich

Does the "head luser" know about your hemmorhoid problem?

As usual you have shown that you are wiser than I.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to learn from a master.

except of course your computers. most of the time a cracker breaks into
your computer he does it not because he's interested in the info you have
on your machine, but because he wants to use your machine to send out spam
(and make a buck) or to break into other computers that *are* worth his
while. in either case, when investigators start looking for the source of
the spam/attack, they end up with you, not the real cracker.

No, but speaking of them, when are you coming over to give them your
tongue bath again?

Thanks,
Rich
