Debian is by far the easier of the two to use. apt-get (as you mention) is very mature, very easy to use and unless you ignore the broken packages warnings, very safe to use. OTOH, do I feel safer with Slackware 10 running on my firewall ? You bet I do. I installed Slackware because I wanted something current and secure, and as the old adage goes, ('If you have a serious problem with Linux, find the nearest Slackware user"), I wanted to learn how it really works. It has a different init system, and should I ever have to work with FreeBSD in the future, I will at least know the first few things about it. Using just one distro can make one over dependent on the tools that that distro provides (as I was with RH until relatively recently), and miss how the OS works on the whole. I have not been disappointed with Slackware in that respect so far. PHONOGRAPH, n.**An*irritating*toy*that*restores*life*to*dead*n oises. *---*from*The*Devil's*Dictionary,*Ambrose*Bierce |
