Default ESS ES1868

I've got the CD player sound working using alsaconf, now what about system
sound I.E. new mail notification etc.
They do not seem to be working and I can't see anything wrong in the sound
configuration

Try "alsamixer" and check volume settings; when you have them as you wish,
save the settings with "alsactl store". (Note: pay particular attention to
the PCM setting(s))

Also, in KDE, check in "Sound & Multimedia" -> "System Notifications" that
sounds are enabled, turned on, and that sounds are associated with events.
