Basically they had both had the same idea for the same story. This is all too commen in the plot lines of B movies but is pretty rare in the types of storys that Gaimen and his ilk do. He started wondering if eventually the world is just right for the same idea to be created independantly by a few people with no links. History shows that this has happend in the past as two different inventors come up with the same invention within a short period of time. I think the most known case is Newton's Calculus.
