| Calling ALL experts, hardware, software, telephaty.... whatever. [subject] Today, Anno Domini 2004, in the month of September, on the eighth day of the month I switched on my trusty box with Slack OS, as is my habit every morning for "donkey's years". Was properly greeted by lilo screen, so I pushed the <CR> button, as prescribed by tradition, to give me my default OS, Slackware Linux, of course. On the "boot:" prompt a letter "a" materialised and the whole caboodle stopped. After few moments I pushed "reset" and the process repeated. Then I noticed that the "caps lock" led is on and does not respond to repeated poking of the "caps lock" button. OK, power off, wait few seconds, power on and supprise, the box boots, "caps lock" is off, "num lock" is on, as it should be and everything is normal again. [/subject] And who said that computers aren't hilarious? Your guess? Stanislaw Slack user from Ulladulla. |

Maybe a dust short circuit, a corroded connector or a minor hard-drive problem. -- Thomas O. This area is designed to become quite warm during normal operation. |

When I was younger and living at home, my dad used to have a young cat that slept on the keyboard, which led to all sorts of fun when a key stuck (Dad is not exactly the best about cleaning soda spills out of the keyboard) after the cat got up. Let's not even get into the fun the cat caused when she tried to get on the keyboard while someone was using it, heh. Now usually the stuck key would be a random innoculous key and just lead to a long series of beeps when the keyboard buffer got filled up. However, every now and again it would be a key with a little more consequence, causing all sorts of interesting bootup effects. I suppose my dad probably still experiences these problems as he still has the keyboard on the desk instead of in a keyboard tray and that cat is still around, although now rather elderly. |
