I experienced a similar situation on an ECS mobo with onboard via8233 chipset. Made following changes to /etc/modules.conf alias char-major-116 snd alias snd-card-0 snd-via82xx options snd-via82xx index=0 dxs_support=4 Try different settings in dxs_support=n That fixed up the quality problem.
