| I've just installed Slackware 10.0 on my laptop. This is the first time ever I've installed Linux, so please don't use too many difficult words. I've noticed my screen resolution is 1024x768. The laptop-screen can do 1400x1050, but that option is not on the list. Also, I've tried a few screensavers, but (among others,) a 3D one, with a tunnel, is very sluggish. My laptop has the following video-card: ATI M10 Mobility Radeon (9600 PRO) 128MB DDR 2D/3D VGA AGP8x I think it should be able to run a simple 3D screensaver smoothly. Any idea what the problem might be? Thanks! -- Michiel |

Also, you might be able to manually edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to allow that display geometry. > Also, I've tried a few > screensavers, but (among others,) a 3D one, with a tunnel, is very > sluggish. That's probably because it's an OpenGL screensaver, and you don't have the opengl-accelerated drivers installed for your card. I suggest not worrying about them unless you absolutely insist on playing games. > My laptop has the following video-card: > > ATI M10 Mobility Radeon (9600 PRO) 128MB DDR 2D/3D VGA AGP8x > > I think it should be able to run a simple 3D screensaver smoothly. > > Any idea what the problem might be? My laptop has the following video-card: without the right drivers for your card, you won't get smooth graphics when it comes to OpenGL screensavers, games, etc. > ATI M10 Mobility Radeon (9600 PRO) 128MB DDR 2D/3D VGA AGP8x the last time i checked, ATI did not have any drivers for any of their notebook video cards. their website gives this as an explanation of why they don't have these drivers: "The display driver supplied with a given notebook has been customized for: * the built-in flat panel display * any other graphics or video options installed in that specific computer. As a result of these customizations, ATI Customer Care is unable to offer drivers for notebooks." i'm sure that i'm not the only one who thinks this sucks, becuase if i only had those drivers, i could watch DVDs more often on when i'm on the road, because it would make the playback SO much smoother. -- "Those who give up freedom for security, deserve neither." -- Thomas Jefferson |
