| I'm using Slackware 10.0 and I want to try the new version (2.8) of Gnome. I went to there site there there really isn't any documentation on compiling and installing a new version of gnome. Anyone ever been through something like this before? Can you give me some tips or point me in the right direction? TIA, --chuck |

I haven't tried it though, so no IMPLIED WARRANTY on this hint -- дамјан 0 and 1. Now what could be so hard about that? |

A simple search for "compiling gnome" without the quotes turns up this on the very first page of responses. http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Compiling_GNOME_2.6 http://library.n0i.net/linux-unix/ap.../faq/c369.html > Anyone ever been through something like this before? It's Gnome 2.8, not 2.6. How do you know that the building process is exactly the same on both? Why is it that so many people chastise others for not doing a Google search on something, when in fact they don't know anything much about the subject themselves? Maybe that makes them feel knowledgeable and important? If the best that you can contribute is to chastise and provide a couple of trivial Google links, why don't you just keep quiet? |

(But, you were more interested in prancing about than helping out, right?) The first problem is that some of Gnome 2.8's new features depend on the hal and dbus libaries. Those aren't in Slackware or very many other distributions, frankly. In turn, they're dependent on a 2.6 kernel. So, before you can even begin to think about building Gnome 2.8 from source on Slackware, you need to build and install a new kernel, build, install and configure dbus and hal, and then start chasing down all the many missing dependencies that will show up once you start actually compiling Gnome. |
