Well, this kind of obviates the need to examine the system much more :-) Congratulations, big time! If you've still got it up, it might be interesting to bring up a console with "top" or something on it while you do something like that. 20 minutes! :-) > But it's fascinating! Is there a record for the most stuff running on the least hardware? Cheers! Rich |

Scour the junk shops for old boards with memory. Fluxbox will be usable with that much memory, and if you can find 64 megs, it'll even seem fast, and your wife will come back to you. Some useful text apps: mc - file manager screen - multiple terminals on one sign-in links - web browser pine - email slrn - usenet mcedit or joe - basic text editors checkinstall - allows self compiled packages to be integrated into Skackware's package management system. pinfo - (http://pinfo.sourceforge.net/) An excellent manual and info page reader, with many usefull features. twin - (http://linuz.sns.it/~max/twin/) A text mode windowing system. You'll have to compile these last two yourself, which you will find very easy to do. > okay now, have fun ! -- Dutchy FiveThreeEightZeroSevenSevenThree@telus.net (but use digits) |

| Just want to thank everyone for their help and encouragment. Put a 4Gb drive into the 486-66 because as a console only system a 80Gb was just wasted. Reinstalled (a couple of times) to get the packages I needed for a console only system with Sendmail etc and it's working away fine. So then put the 80Gb into a 933-P3 and installed the full package on that and I am so impressed!! This is a whole new world - everything runs so sweetly. Looks like Windows is only going to be used for games from now on! So for any newbies out there all I can say is perservere - it's worth it. Plug away - try different approaches and Google and two other sites I found very helpful are. http://www.linuxquestions.org/ http://www.linuxforum.com/ Thanks all once again. (sent via Pan!!) |
