The full FAQ is available at http://wombat.san-francisco.ca.us/cgi-bin/fom for your convenience. If you are a new reader of the newsgroup, you are strongly encouraged to read this entire document and the full FAQ before posting. I still need help! What other docs exist on the internet? * Moderator: kkeller@speakeasy.net (inherited from parent) * First of all read the posts on the alt.os.linux.slackware newsgroup! You can also search using google, previous posts that your newsserver may not have, at http://groups.google.com the Google USENet search engine. The alt.os.linux.slackware FAQ http://wombat.san-francisco.ca.us/cgi-bin/fom The Official Slackware Book http://www.slackware.com/book/ Other Slackware Documents to be found http://www.slackware.com ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/ (go to the directory containing your version, and check out the .txt files) http://linuxtipps.sourceforge.net/ The Linux Documentation Project http://www.tldp.org Some general linux help sites http://www.linuxguruz.org http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/index.html http://www.icon.co.za/~psheer/book/index.html Program specific documentation http://www.freshmeat.net "use the search engine to find the program" Then go to the programs homepage and see if you can find info there. Slackware Packages for some programs can be found at http://www.linuxpackages.net/ X Window System for XFree86 http://www.xfree86.org Driver status for Xfree86: http://www.xfree.org/4.1.0/Status.html "listings are by chipset not your card" The kernel http://www.digitalhermit.com/linux/kernel.html http://www.kernelnewbies.org Where to get the kernel http://www.kernel.org Firewalls http://www.linuxguruz.org/iptables/ And finally in the net section the most powerful of all tools the search engine. Most people on the newsgroup use Google. http://www.google.com Some basic tips on using google http://www.google.com/help/basics.html The trick with using a search engine is twofold (1) giving it the right info. Try giving it the name of the thing you are having problems with such as kernel, ipchains, vim, dcron. Then next add a little about your problem such as loopback bug, setup, error 3147, timing. If you get too many hits you might want to filter by typing something that is more particular about your problem : linux, slackware, fix, patch, howto, or any other info you can think of. So in the end you might end up with searches like. kernel loopback bug patch ipchains setup howto vim errors slackware dcron timing slackware Now the last two didn't give good results so you'd have to change the search query a bit. So trying "vim errors" and a lot of fiddleing gets me dcron -index -distributions -package (2) Is not getting the right web page as that is obvious when you read it. The problem is not looking deep enough into a page. Some pages have links that you might want to try. Some pages are newsgroup listings see if there is a followup thread link. Try clicking at least three or more links deep, even if they go to another site. Other keywords, try and use plurals so try both bug and bugs. Watch out: google doesn't like common words like "about" they need to be prefixed with a +: manual, help, bug, usage, use, setup, +about, settings. Also with google it has a cached page option so if the page you want to look at no longer exists click on the cached link under the page description. * 2003-Jan-04 11:22 |
