| got another hint from "linuxquestions" http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/201558 refering me to /etc/hotplug/usb/libusbscanner in that file permissiion is granted to the group "scanners." I changed that to "users." am not sure as I have been fiddling aroung but think all you have to do for slack 10 and the 2.6.7 is the fstab line and then change the group. seems to work now - time to explore something else.
