Default Topologilinux - Newbie Problems

I am a complete newbie to Linux and am trying to get my feet wet with
Topologilinux 4.0.0. This comes with the Slackware 9.1 distribution. I
have several problems (many of which are probably related to one
another). Here's a brief list, any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am currently trying to sort through the many HowTo's (if there is
one thing I appreciate about Linux, its the documentation), but any
help in pointing me in the right direction would be much appreciated.

1. Examination of the messages during boot indicate that the network
card is recognized and the driver is installed without error (via
rhine). However once booted I can't make any connection with my card
or modem or internet.

2. I can't find the netconfig script file anywhere on the disk. I
can't seem to find any other script to configure anything network
related either.

3. Many of the shell commands that I thought would be common to any
distribution do not seem to work ( like ping ). They don't seem to be
recognized. The very basic ones like ls seem to work fine.

4. While logged in as root, I created a new user and pwd for that
user. Then when I log out and log back in as that user it gives me
some message that my session lasted less than 10 seconds and that I
should try to log in in a 'safe' mode. So I end up only being able to
log in as root.

5. Do I have to create a /home/username folder prior to using the
useradd? I was also getting an error that it couldn't find a home
folder for the new user and asked if it should use the /root folder.

Is this a problem with setting permissions or something else?

The install went without incident and I chose to install all packages
which it seemed to do. I'm stumped and feeling relatively stupid.

The last time I dealt with this type of thing was back in 93 when I
had to do some programming on a Sparc machine running
OpenWindows...but back then everything was managed by the university
techies..

Thanks for any help.

what do you mean "comes with the Slackware 9.1 distribution? you mean it's
based on slackware? unfortunately, i've never heard of topologilinux
before, and i wouldn't be surprised if nobody else here has. we have no way
of knowing to what extent this spin-off was changed or altered, so there is
not much point in us trying to answer your questions: anything we would
suggest would be based on our knowledge of slackware, and we have no idea
if it applies to topologilinux as well. your best bet is probably
<https://sourceforge.net/forum/?group_id=56574>.

either that or install The Real Thing (tm) of course. ;-)

There is an entry in the FAQ for this newsgroup at
http://wombat.san-francisco.ca.us/fa.../cache/90.html, which covers
this matter.
