| I notice that in a message to the slackware-security list Pat has stated that he believes it is time to remove Epiphany and Galeon in favour of Mozilla/Firefox. Isn't Epiphany a part of the base GNOME system? Surely without it GNOME is incomplete? -- Stephen Chadfield http://www.chadfield.com/ |

I've run it without Epiphany for quite a while without problems. ~Mik -- Top-Bottom Programming never gets you where you wanted to go. I think Mozilla will probably be dropped in the future, as well, in favor of Firefox and Thunderbird, with Mozilla melding completely into Netscape. I know whenever I used to upgrade Mozilla, my Epiphany and Galeon broke, so I just stopped using them. I'm thinking we might stop using Moz ourselves and start using Firefox/Thunderbird here... they both work very good and they are supported well. -- Gary Carlson -------------------------------------------------- The mind is like a barrel, if you leave it open some jerk will come along and dump garbage in it! -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =----- |

I agree. While I haven't used Thunderbird, I can say for certain that Firefox is a kick ass browser that's an order of magnitude better than mozilla for that task. Not only is it much smaller even with loads of plugins, the browser loads and renders pages much quicker. All in all, I see no reason why anyone uses mozilla for web browsing these days. > I know whenever I used to > upgrade Mozilla, my Epiphany and Galeon broke, so I just stopped using > them. I just stopped upgrading mozilla. :^) I still think Galeon is a better browser than firefox if only for the great book mark editing. I'll likely continue to use Galeon over Firefox even if that means compiling my own package. - -- It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, Than for a man to hear the song of fools. Basically, neither will work securely at this point, because they have not been updated to compile against the most recent, and only secure version of Mozilla. Jeffrey |

You can take many applications out of GNOME without breaking it but that doesn't mean it is a good idea. GNOME was supposed to supply a complete, integrated desktop whose applications follow the HIG. As non-GNOME programs neither Mozilla or FireFox are currently, or are likely to become in the future, properly integrated GNOME applications. If Pat removes Epiphany from GNOME then AFAIC Slackware's GNOME package will be incomplete. -- Stephen Chadfield http://www.chadfield.com/ |

That's the reason people use Mozilla, its still number one. Talking about using on a 56K dialup and PentII. |

So you're telling me that Firefox + Thunderbird isn't faster than Mozilla doing those same tasks. I find that insane. I've done many tests (rather anecdotal but still) and ever time the smaller utilities with a more narrow scope combine to produce a better system than the bloat that is Mozilla. - -- It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, Than for a man to hear the song of fools.
