Is it just me or does kde 3.3 from this source crash the system when
root tries to logout?

Nope, it's not just you. I get a weird bluish square in the upper left
of the screen, and my system locks. I have to power off --
ctrl/alt/delete won't even work.

Yes, it looks like a battery icon in the upper left corner when it
freezes while attempting to log out of root. But, I've been using it
for a few days now as user, and am not noticing problems.

Is there a good reason for running KDE as root?

I would have thought the most basic security regime avoids running any
unnecessary applications with root privileges...

I don't know. I've never logged in to KDE as root.

Cheers!

So...what you're saying is "it really isn't a bug if you don't do it?".
That's sort of like the old joke "doctor, it hurts when I do this. Well,
don't do that!".

When you're reloading a system and restoring files, it makes sense
to be running KDE as root.

Then, do you mean you actually need KDE to restore files ?
I am awfully sorry but either I don't understand or I can't understand ...
