| Hi again. I'm trying to set up a multiboot system with 98, XP and Linux but I'm running into problems. I installed 98 first on a FAT partition and then XP on a NTFS partition and both worked ok from MS Boot Menu. I then installed Slackware with LILO in the MBR and when I boot up I get the Linux menu first with a choice between Linux and Windows. If I select Windows I get the MS Menu again. 98 works ok but if I select XP I get a can't find file hal.dll. error. It looks like the system can no longer 'see' the NTFS partition. If I load Linux I can verify the file still exists. Anyone else had experience of this? Graham |

My guess would be that the error is in getting an MS boot menu involved. |

| The problem is that WinXP uses the MBR too. The way to do this is instaling lilo in a bootable partition, then insert the option to linux in the boot manager of WinXP. Do you have a floppy to boot WinXP? There is a good explanation about it in the Chapter 7 of the Slackware Book (CD 4). As it's not my main machine, really I only need 98 and Linux. (98 cos I have an Interact Steering Wheel and no drivers were ever released or written for other o/s. They've now gone bust.) |

I've decided that having XP wasn't to important on this machine after messing the system completely went for the 'safe' route of just 98 and Linux. I'm following the thread on the 'best' book to buy as it looks like I've got a lot of learning to do. BTW where can I get the Slackware book, when you mentioned CD4 I assumed it was on CD4 of the distro but can only find source files and stuff. Cheers - Graham |
