Default Slack substitute for PPC?

Hi,

Within a few months I've become a die-hard Slacker (after, in chronological
order, Mandrake, Debian, Gentoo and Libranet). I've installed it on my
Pentium III 500 and it just! works!

Now I'd like to install something similar on my iBook instead of OS X. Not
that I dislike OS X. Only I've so much gotten in the habit of doing my
everyday work on Linux that I also want it on my other box. Unfortunately
the Slackintosh project seems to have died a natural death.

Question: what would be the closest substitute for Slack on PPC? I thought
about installing something of a base Debian Sarge and then compile from
source from there. I hate apt-get for two reasons: 1) since I'm on dialup,
I can't stand having to download 40 MB worth of updates only because I
decided to download and install BitchX. 2) "Broken packages", now what?
Alternative: Gentoo or some other basic-and-no-bullshit distro. But maybe
you have some other suggestions?

No flames intendedD

Probably either Gentoo or CRUX.

Try Ubuntu for PPC. www.ubuntulinux.org
Its based on Debian so you should be familiar with it.

most likely CRUX/PPC. it's even more bare-bones than slack (heck, it makes
slack look positively bloatware ;-) but given your development track along
various distros, you'll probably like it. i had it installed on my ibook
for a while, and i liked it a lot. i took it off because i don't have time
right now to play with it, but at some point i intend to make it my main
distro on my ibook, and phase out slackintosh. (nothing against
slackintosh, but i don't like the fact that it is not being maintained
anymore, and i don't have the inclination/time/equipment to maintain it
myself.)

the only thing i didn't really like about it is that CRUX still uses devfs
even in version 2.0, which uses a 2.6 kernel. i had some success replacing
it with udev, but it still needed some tinkering to get it right.

anyway, you'll find CRUX here: <http://www.crux.nu>, and the PPC port here:

YellowDog is basically RedHat ported to PPC (not MAC, or Mac, for that
matter), so I doubt it'd be the closest substitute for Slackware on PPC.

I have used YDL on PPC, and it's okay, but I'd go with some of the other
suggestions (CRUX, Gentoo) before trying YDL if you're looking for
something Slack-like.
