Default Screen Problem

Using slack 10.0 and a Gainward Geforce FX 5200 Pro 660 TV/DVI (using
the analog output to a crt). Motherboard is an MSI K7N2 Delta, CPU is
an Athlon XP 2500 (Barton Core running at stock clock) and memory is a
512 stick of PC 3200 Kingston running at 333. I have removed all
framebuffers from kernel 2.4.26. Also using KDE 3.3, the NVIDIA
1.0.6111 driver set, xorg.conf modified for nvidia etc. Display is set
to 1600x1200 at 16 bpp but issue persists at other resolutions and
settings as well.

The problem is is that I always get blurry screen when windows (and
occasionally on the desktop wallpaper) are maximized. It is kind of a
melt and wobble effect. This will last for some minutes then all works
well. It can re-emerge later as when a screensaver is unlocked. Any
ideas? Any help would be appreciated. I have tried usenet, google et
al to no avail. I do not think that there is any defect in any hardware
and the p.s. is an enermax 350 watt that works well.

I would check to ensure that your vertical and horizontal refresh rates
are correct for your monitor. You could also have a defective monitor.
Have you tried the kernel's nv driver for the card? Have you tried
using a different OS install such as the Slackware Live cd, or a
Knoppix disk? Have you tried a different config file like that produced
by X -Configure? Does this effect cross different window managers?

Same issue with Mandrake, other desktop managers, have tried various
alternative vertical and horizontal settings, modelines - no joy.
Memtest shows ram is okay - I found some info that indicates it may be
due to KDE resetting some values. I will focus on this and the values
found in xorg.conf. Thanks for the assistance.

Electromagnetic interference from some nearby device? Try moving the crt.

Sounds 100% related to the monitor itself. Please list what monitor you
are using.
Some monitors (even so-called high-end Viewsonics) have poor power
regulation, and will do exactly what you described.
Blurry text, wobbling effect, but it will go away sometimes.
It will happen especialy frequent if you run the monitor out of spec,
too high of resolution/refresh rate.

I suppose your video card could produce that same effect, but I have not
seen that personaly.

It is not the location of the crt, have moved it around. Never had this
problem before with previous versions of Linux or windows. Still
looking at the vertical and horizontal refresh rates. Will finish out
that line of probability and post results. If that stums me then I will
grab another monitor to test out that theory.

Thanks to all who have posted suggestions.

it sounds like a refresh problem to me i would even get this in windows
if the refresh rate was to high.

Tell me did you have this problem with older distributions with the
same monitor

No. I still think it is KDE resetting the refresh rates, window sizes
and all that ilk. Still digging around with the KDE and xorg stuff.
Will post results after I finish that avenue.

Thanks for the input.

It all works fine now. 1600x1200, no twitch, blur, melt or whatever.
It is essentially a standard setup. The only thing I can think of is
there was dust somewhere that affected one of the hardware pieces. The
only other difference is I had had some difficulties with the gtk
pixbuf, now since corrected. Thanks to all who replied and for their
suggestions. All I can do now is shake my head and say WTF!
