| Hi all, Has anyone used a KVM switch with slackware boxes (or any other dist for that matter) and some windows boxes perhaps? If so, did you have any issues? And what brand/model of KVM did you use? I'm considering getting an 8 port for some of my machines. Thanks, Julien |

Can't figure out the name but it looks like blue half circles around three red dots. It was rather cheap. Micke -- # The truth lies in there, # # somewhere in the manual. # |

I couldn't get my mouse wheel to work under both linux machines (If I connected it directly to box, it worked). Win worked fine both ways. On RH, the picture was not good, it vibrated a little. If I disconnected Win box, it was ok. Never found out why, tried changing cables... Switch was "Digitus KVM Switch DCIC IC-814-I". Igor |

I run a variety of distros on both boxes, and have never noticed a problem. |

I have an IOGear GCS632U, a small 2 port USB KVM with audio. It's worked fine with Slackware 10 and Redhat 7.3 before that. A WinXP box is connected to the second port, which has also worked without incident. Doug |

No problems whatsoever. Good luck, Huub |

I did have issues when I tried using a Logitech cordless keyboard/mouse. Windows had no problems. FreeBSD had some minor issues with the mouse, but the keyboard was fine. Linux had intermittent issues ( but really annoying/serious ones ) with both the mouse and keyboard. I finally gave up + went back to the "regular" mouse + keyboard and have had no problems at all. At Work : Very bad luck with Belkin KVM's. I've seen them recommended by other people, but we just didn't have good experiences with them. The $50 Linksys models have been far more reliable for us. We also have a couple Raritan KVM's. these are probably the nicest I've used. If you can afford them, I highly recommend them. -- - Matt - |

The good news were that the image quality was OK. The bad news were: When using hot-key (scroll-lock, scroll-lock, number) to switch to a computer, the number typed was fed into the Slackware computer. This meant that I would get an extra number at the beginning of the password dialog of xscreensaver. Or worse, if the screen wasn't locked I could get a number into an editor. When not using hot-keys but the toggle button, there was a pause so going round all four PCs tock rather long time. In XF86Config, I had to replace Mouse protocol "Auto" with "IMPS/2", otherwise the mouse behaved strange after switching to the Slackware PC. I was never able to solve that problem on a WinXP machine. To sum up, the switchbox is OK thanks to the good image quality if you don't need to change active PC very often. If you jump among the PCs alot you might find the shortcomings annoying. Other KVM switches which I have som experience from: ATEN switches, they seem to have very varying image quality. Avocent: Not as good image quality as Belkin, but seem to work better. However, I had one user which prefered to replace his Avocent with a Belkin. After that he replaced the Belkin with a D-Link. D-Link: I have no experience myself from these, but two of my users like them very much. One more thing to say about Belkin and Avocent: There seem to be a hardware problem with some computers. With Avocent it was not possible to use a hot-key to switch away from a problem-computer. With Belkin, if I remember right, the mouse didn't work every other time on the problem computer. regards Henrik -- The address in the header is only to prevent spam.
