| I need fax! I wanna go the printer/scanner/software route instead of a dedicated fax machine. I have a printer (bro-1440) and a modem card (somewhere around here) and so need a scanner to complete it. Anyone have any recommends for a cheap linux compat scanner? Feel free to toss in a app recommendation. Thnx. nb |

Check the docs for the linux iscan software to make certain the model you want is covered. I recently bought a Perfection 2400 PHOTO for $75 with free shipping from the Epson online store (refurb). This one will also scan negatives and slides. The iscan software works fine, and sane support is good, as well. |

Because of their rip-off printers, I absolutely dispise Epson. OTOW, scanners require no ink, Epson's primary scam. I'll check them out, though. Their customer support is quite good. nb |

Their printers print nice though. I also switched a bro-1440 (bought with office max coupons |

What driver did you use? I went with lprng and the included hl1250 driver. It works ok, but I get huge text, about 14-17 point. I've been so busy I haven't had time to tweak it. Any suggestions? nb |

I did have to manually set the margins though. Setting margins on cups seems a bit weird and I haven't spent much time on it. I think I just set 0.25 inches all around and left it like that. The printer manual says what the margins are but from kprinter, it lets you set the margins at about 3 different spots and I'm not too sure about it. Its working and I don't mess with it. > I went with lprng and the included hl1250 driver. It works ok, but I get > huge text, about 14-17 point. I've been so busy I haven't had time to > tweak > it. Either way, I can't help you much since I've only had a little bit of experiences using cups (3 printers total), and none using lprng. I use kde as my main desktop environment and usually print from that editors or word processor. Good luck. |

I had an earlier Brother (1040) which was fine when it worked but then I found the drums kept failing after about 20 pages from new. After the fifth drum I gave up and bought a Kyocera Mita FS1010, which works well with Linux and doesn't need drum replacements at all.
