Default Acrobat reader

I downloaded linux-509.gz from adobe, and have had some difficulties.
I'll either be warning you about them, or you'll be laughing at me for
having run into them.

First, when I unzipped and untarred the file, unlike *every other* gz
file I've worked with, it did *not* create its own folder, but plopped
everything into my home folder! Well, not too many files, and they're
all in UPPER CASE so easy to spot & remove later.

Did the su command to run a root session, and ran ./INSTALL. Seemed to
go well. Exited from the root session, and then found I had NO write
privileges to my home folder. Back to root session, i discovered that
the owner of my home folder was no longer me, but a five digit number!
What the??? As root, I did
chown my_id my_id
in the /home folder to fix up ownership of my (own) folder!

Is this a bug in INSTALL, or something I should have known about?

Wiping the sweat from my brow,
Nick.

It's a bug in INSTALL; courtesy of the geniuses at Adobe.

One way to prevent such damage is to use an unarchiver with
a preview window; I use TkZip, it's very nice:

less <file.tar.gz> also shows you the contents of the tar ball.

btw, this implies it's not a bug in INSTALL, but a badly created tar ball.

Out of curiosity: Is there a specific reason(s) why the "already-included"
"xpdf" will not meet your needs? I have always thought that "xpdf" does
a *better* job at presenting .pdf documents, than the *nix version of
Adobe Acrobat.

FYI, Acrobat Reader 5.0.10 was just released.

Release focus: Minor security fixes

Yes, but how do you get xpdf or gv to work as a plugin (or whatever) with
FireFox? At least with FireFox there is a web page somewhere that explains
how to install acroread... and I think that's why so many people use it.

I'm trying to get Scribus working, and I recall having read at
scribus.net that installing Adobe Acrobat is a recommended part of its
complete dtp setup.

I'll see if I can dig up the reference..

Check out the final couple of paragraphs of "man xpdf". It tells you
exactly how to do this. Before I had the Acrobat plug-in, this is
what I used. I am not sure if it works if one *also* has the plug-in
installed.
