Default Installation Prob

This is my first Linux installation adn I am trying to install Slackware
10.0 on an old NetServer LH Pro. I have created two CDs and can boot to CD
one however after the initial spash screen I follow instructions and simply
press enter when the screen mode changes and numerous items scroll past...
when the screen mode changes I am no longer able to read anything as the
font is all jumbled etc, the screen stops scrolling and waits at a flashing
cursor at what appears to read something like "...... to select a
keyboard..."

Any ideas ?

Thanks

Murphy

what at least you can do, is, at the boot prompt, enter this parameter
video=vga16ff

it will disable the framebuffer. Then you will go on your install on a
80×25 console that should avoid the problem

Still, this is not a solution to the problem of the garbled font on
framebuffer, but someone will tell you I guess

Personnally I always prefer to use a framebuffer only when I want it,
and load then the matrox one

erm what I mean is that the problem won't occur on this 80×25 terminal
but it is not an answer to, why is your font garbled when the
framebuffer loads.

Paf,

Thanks for the prompt reply. At the boot prompt I have entered the command
above without success as I receive the following error:
"Could not find kernal image: video=vga16ff"

I have been looking through the installation help section of the Slackware
site however I have found sections on boot disks etc but nothing relating to
booting from a CD

Thanks again

Murphy

OK, got that to work as I now enter:
linux video=vga16ff

Once I enter this something scrolls to quick to read "loading....." then the
screen mode changes and goes blank, the monitor power light flicks on and
off like the computer has been switched off with the monitor still on ?

Help ?

Thanks

Murphy

argh

could you try
bare.i video=vga16ff

(or even bare.i on its own, maybe)

as far as I know (I installed quite a long time ago, I still run a 7.0
and a 9.0), bare.i is the default kernel loaded on install. I am all but
sure, but I don't know if you may enter "linux" on install...

if you have scsi devices, use scsi.s rather than bare.i
the choice is amidst the available kernels in the kernels/ directory of
your CD-ROM

I hardly recall but I think that if, at boot time, just after the boot
prompt, as soon as you have pressed Enter, you press Ctrl, you should
also get a VGA menu to chose a good mode

but first, give a try to bare.i and (bare.i video=vga16ff if
necessary)

I have to stop my puter to fix something on my keyboard, I'll confirm
about the Ctrl key and VGA menu within half an hour if no one has done
so meanwhile.

(what a pain in the ass can be the cleaning of a keyboard)

ok, this is _not_ the Ctrl key... and I can't remember which key it is
(but I think someone will tell us soon). Still, you can simply add
vga=ask

and you'll be prompted

did it lead anywhere with bare.i ?

Paf,

Still no luck, I have tried bare.i and scsi.s both with and without
video=vga16ff and the screen always simply switches off as if the PC has
powered down, the only time I get and screen response is when I simply hit
enter although that is illegible.
I have tried pressing CTRL to access the VGA modes but nothing came up.

Thanks

Murphy
