| -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Well since this is the New Year, I figured I'd put out an update. We are milestones ahead of where we were this time last year. For one thing, I've gotten off my lazy butt and got to work! As of this moment 13 chapters are in a finished state[0]. 1 chapter is in reasonably complete state[1]. One chapter is listed as being in progress[2]. Only 4 chapters have not yet been begun and 1 chapter is on permanent hold. So what's all this mean? Well, the reasonably complete chapter and the in progress chapter are entirely new additions to the Good Book from the ground up. Chapter 14 deals with security and chapter 17 is an introduction to emacs. These have long been needed. Unfortunately the chapter on permanent hold is the chapter for printers and other peripherals. That's a big task and one I am not about to tackle alone (at least not any time soon). Chapters 6, 15, 18, and 19 (X, Archive Files, Package Management, and ZipSlack) haven't yet been begun. I'm going to concentrate first on archive files and package management before looking at X. Honestly I am not the greatest guy to write the X chapter so anyone willing to step forward and put their money where their mouth is, I'm waiting for ya. So what's been added in the past year? Let's do a break-down. ================================================== ====================== Chapter 2 - Non-official online help has been added, such as google and their linux specific searches. Chapter 3 - Massive rework. Dependencies updated, removal of floppy install method, fixed software series, all new setup walkthrough. Chapter 4 - Fixed system layout, fixed up runlevel scripts, fixed kernel 2.4 compile instructions, added mention of the differences in 2.6 compiling including turning verbosity on if something breaks. Chapter 5 - Re-worked to discuss numerous changes including rc.inet1.conf and rc.netdevice, more indepth discussion of dhcp, default gateway configuration, /etc/resolv.conf, new wireless support discussed (thanks largely to Keith Keller), samba added to dicussion of network file systems and file sharing Chapter 7 - Updated to mention lack of 1024 cylinder requirement, deprecated old NT4 hack to dual-boot linux, recommended installing LILO to MBR to boot everything. Chapter 8 - Added discussion of [ ] to wildcard matching, added mention of screen in virtual terminals section Chapter 9 - Changed syntax for chown both user and group to ":" away from "." for portability in OS's, better discussion of ways to change permissions including alpha and octal bits and why it's good to know both. Chpater 10- Categorized commands, added discussion of the most pager Chapter 11- Added discussion of useful options to top. Chapter 12- Nothing really. What more can you say about adduser? Chapter 13- Categorized in the fashion of chapter 10, added discussion of dig "the meanest dog in the pound", warned of dangers of telnet and showed what it's good for, added discussion of ssh and why it's a good thing, replaced mail with nail, added links and wget, added wall Chapter 14- All new. Chapter 16- Greatly enhanced discussion of vi including additional commands like split. Chpater 17 - All new. ================================================== ====================== So what's in store for the new year? Well, I intend to begin work on archive files and package management in January. Unless some brave soul embarks on a quest to do chapter 6, that will wait until those two are done, then I'll tackle it. ZipSlack will likely be my last chapter. If no one steps forward to do printers and peripherals, it will be dropped. Maybe we'll finish this damn book this year?[3] :^) [0] This means they are fit for edification, not necessarily without cosmetic flaws. [1] This means I've got something up that I think is good enough to finsih with, but I need some comments and help, or it'll just get moved to complete status with no further work as time goes on. These chapters may not be as up to snuff as completed chapters. [2] This means that I've got _smoething_ up there, but I'm no where near satisfied with it. Just for newcomers :-) Happy New Slack Year and thanks for your really useful work! Regards, Mikhail |

(http://wombat.san-francisco.ca.us/ma...nfo/slackbook), while I checked my write-up of wireless configuration against a Slackware 10 box, I do not actually have a machine with both Slackware and wireless; all actual testing was done on a CRUX-PPC box. So, if you can at least verify that what I wrote actually works, it'd be a big boost, and if you can improve on it so much the better. > Chapter 12- Nothing really. What more can you say about adduser? "Never delete /etc/shadow." I doubt there's much to change in chapter 12, but if you spot something before I do, please email me so I can update it. --keith -- kkeller-usenet@wombat.san-francisco.ca.us (try just my userid to email me) AOLSFAQ=http://wombat.san-francisco.ca.us/cgi-bin/fom |

But could someone (Alan?) place a link to the section on wireless networking in the table of contents for chapter 5? At present the link at the end of chapter5-tcpip.html claims to take you to the section on NFS, but it actually leads to the wireless stuff! Really good to see the chapter on emacs too :-) A happy new year to all atb Glyn -- RTFM http://www.tldp.org/index.html GAFC http://slackbook.lizella.net/ STFW http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...inux.slackware JFGI http://jfgi.us/ |

If not, than they would own the copyright to their own "stuff." You, of course own the copyright to your stuff. I'm not sure who actually owns the copyright to the book as a whole.... probably ALL the contributors if there is no prior agreement. I bring this up because there might be royalty issues on whatever sales Pat makes from the book.... depending on what rights you and your group of authors give him. I've been in the publishing biz for a long time... and I know some of this... but I'm not an expert on pub-law. I don't think you will have any problem getting the contributors to sign-off on donating their work, and I urge you do this. You never know. One of the contributors might get divorced (or die) and the spouse/estate might come after you or Pat for a piece of change. It's happened before with college texts where a bunch of professors create a compendium. Lots of good pub-legal stuff at http://www.ivanhoffman.com/ Disclaimer: Ivan is a friend of mine, known him for many years, and I would trust his judgment. But he is NOT my attorney, never has been, and I have no other "dealings" with him beyond mere friendship. Al C. |
